Around Ruthin
Ruthin is the county town of Denbighshire surrounded by the Clwydian Range and known as 'The Jewel in the Vale'. It is the only Welsh town to be named in the Daily Telegraph's top 50 towns in the UK and one of the most beautiful market towns in Wales.
Walk in the park by the river Clwyd or stroll around the town to discover its attractions including Ruthin Goal modelled on Pentonville, first opened in 1775. In front of Exmewe Hall (now Barclays bank) stands the immense limestone block on which King Arthur is said to have beheaded Huail, a rival in love. Ruthin library, once a courthouse exhibits local artists work. The new arts centre and gallery displays high quality work. Ruthin School, founded by Gabriel Goodman, dates back to 1595. A popular summer music festival brings a variety of acts and events. There is a regular local produce market and weekly country market. Ruthin has several hostelries, restaurants, delightful tea rooms and cafes. For the shopper there are many privately run fashion boutiques, gift, book, jewellery, leather, interior design and Welsh shops. Also a fabulous delicatessen and hair and beauty salons.
